4 Critical Phases of the IMG Journey

Phase 1: Build the Foundation

Year 1-2 Post-Grad / Pre-Application

This is the critical score-building phase. Focus on dedicated study and ensuring your core medical knowledge is at a US standard.

  • Pass USMLE Step 1 (or equivalent).
  • Achieve a competitive Step 2 CK score (aim for 240+).
  • Verify credentials and obtain ECFMG certification (or plan timeline).

  • Secure and complete 4-6 months of USCE (hands-on preferred).
  • Obtain strong Letters of Recommendation (LORs) from US physicians.
  • Engage in research (publications are ideal, presentations are a must).

March - June

You've reached the finish line! Secure your position, complete any necessary licensing/visa paperwork, and prepare for residency.

  • Celebrate Match Day! (or prepare for SOAP/Scramble).
  • Complete visa paperwork (H-1B or J-1) and state medical licensing.
  • Relocate, adjust to the new city, and prepare for Day 1 of residency.
